Why The Lords of Salem is one of the most anticipated movies of 2013

After its premiere at last years Toronto International Film Festival, Rob Zombie’s eagerly awaited venture The Lords of Salem, was lauded by critics and fans alike who were able to see the movie in it’s early viewing.

Now read why some critics are listing The Lords of Salem as one of their “most anticipated” movies of 2013.

From Freddy in Space: No. 2 (out of 10) Most Anticipated:

Rob Zombie makes his long awaited return to making his own original horror movies with Lords of Salem, about a coven of witches out for blood. I’ve been very excited about this movie ever since I first heard about it, considering I feel Zombie is at his best when he’s doing his own thing, rather than putting his spin on an established property. Though I absolutely love both House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects, I wasn’t so much of a fan of his take on Halloween, and especially didn’t care for the sequel.

That being said, I’ve still got a whole lot of faith in Zombie as a filmmaker, and I will never not be excited about any new movie he puts out, no matter what I thought about the last one. Now that I’ve seen the trailer for this one, I’ve got my worries that it’s going to be a little too artistic and out there (ala Halloween 2), but I’ll reserve judgement and retain my excitement until I see the movie for myself.

From Bad Haven: No 1 (out of 6) Most Anticipated:

Rob Zombie always adds an edge to whatever he portrays in films. Captain Spaulding in House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects was undoubtedly one of the scariest clowns to ever grace silver screens. Michael Myers was a towering presence of evil and mayhem in Zombie’s version of Halloween. Hence, when given the subject of witches, I’m more than ready to see how Zombie envisions the occult. This mind-bending hell ride will hit theaters on April 26th, 2013.

Love them or hate them, Rob Zombie’s Halloween movies show a filmmaker who’s surgical when it comes to providing horrific imagery and memorable kills, even if the films’ scripts are messes. The horror-loving rocker turned director is at his best when he’s handling self-created material, as in the demented House of 1,000 Corpsesand its calmer but no less nightmarish follow-up The Devil’s Rejects. And with The Lords of Salem, Zombie could deliver his sickest work yet.

Starring his wife (and go-to actress) Sheri Moon Zombie, The Lords of Salem follows a radio DJ who unknowingly awaken age-old witches after a record spins backwards live on the air. But, really, the movie’s plot is secondary here.

Based on its batty trailer and haunting stills, The Lords of Salem appears to be a visually stunning, image-driven callback to old-school Mario Bava and Dario Argento cinema, with welcome doses of occultism and anything-goes wackiness tossed in for good measure.
