Review: Zombie Horror “effectively captures the atmosphere and vibe of a Zombie live show”

Rob Zombie Live DVD

Its out! And the feedback has been fantastic.  Check out this review from Loudwire, who say “with Zombie’s cinematic background, it’s no surprise that the show is heavy on visuals.” And “…while those elements are interesting and highly entertaining, they are just icing on the cake. Zombie and company are the stars of the show, with great performances from guitarist John 5, bassist Piggy D. and drummer Ginger Fish. Zombie is a master showman, holding the crowd in the palm of his hand.”

If you’ve ever been to a Rob Zombie concert, you know it’s an event, a spectacle and an extravaganza.

That is captured in his first concert film ‘The Zombie Horror Picture Show,’ available on DVD and Blu-ray.

The DVD was filmed in the summer of 2013 at the Houston and Dallas, Texas stops of the Mayhem Festival tour a few months after the release of their latest album ‘Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor.’ It includes 16 songs and clocks in at more than 80 minutes.

Nearly half of the songs in the set are from either Zombie’s 1998 debut ‘Hellbilly Deluxe’ or its 2010 sequel ‘Hellbilly Deluxe 2.’ He also plays material from 2001‘s ‘The Sinister Urge’ and 2006‘s ‘Educated Horses.’

The opener ‘Teenage Nosferatu Pussy’ is from the aforementioned ‘Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor.’ along with the Grand Funk Railroad cover ‘We’re An American Band’ and a couple others. He also goes back to his White Zombie days for crowd favorites including ‘Super Charger Heaven,’ ‘More Human Than Human’ and ‘Thunder Kiss ‘65.’

With Zombie’s cinematic background, it’s no surprise that the show is heavy on visuals. There are numerous video screens and always something happening onstage, whether it’s an animatronic robot lumbering around or Zombie performing on top of a giant boom box. Fake snow even starts falling during ‘House of 1000 Corpses.’

And while those elements are interesting and highly entertaining, they are just icing on the cake. Zombie and company are the stars of the show, with great performances from guitarist John 5, bassist Piggy D. and drummer Ginger Fish. Zombie is a master showman, holding the crowd in the palm of his hand.

The visuals on the DVD are excellent. You get a good view of everything that’s happening on stage, plus numerous crowd shots. Shocking, but the crowd shots tend to zoom in and focus on attractive females!

We only wish there were a few extras on ‘The Zombie Horror Picture Show’ to go along with the concert footage. Other than that, it’s a superb first concert film that effectively captures the atmosphere and vibe of a Zombie live show.

4 Stars
